How Rust Attacks Your Car

Rust prevention is a necessity for car owners; the look, safety, reliability, and value a car depends on its owner’s care and rust control. Cars are a major investment, not to mention the time and money required to keep your car protected from the elements. Unfortunately, cars are rust magnets. There are so many parts, nooks, and crannies on automobiles that standard rust prevention technologies often fail.

Although nearly all car companies put some form of rust protection on their cars, but the results are limited. Not even the paint on the exterior of the car can escape rust’s negative effect.

In fact, according to the Automobile Association of America, “More cars are destroyed by rust than by accidents.”

Scientifically speaking, rusting is the process of iron decaying into iron oxide; three things are required for this to happen: iron, water, and oxygen. In the end, it results in the disintegration of the respective iron structure. Here are a few things to know in order to protect your car from rust:

  1. Road salt exacerbates rust on automobiles

Through an electrochemical process, the rusting process is initiated by oxygen; road salt (an electrolyte) accelerates the transfer of electrons from iron to oxygen gas. In such a way, road salt catalyzes the corrosion of cars, especially the underside, where salt has the most contact with a car.

  2. Water is not your car’s friend

After ionized oxygen gas forms, it reacts with water to create hydroxide ions that have low pH. Storing a car in a damp place or even improperly drying it after a car wash may cause an automobile to rust.

  3. Imperfections form quickly.

Finally, iron(II) reacts with iron(III) with hydroxide, which results in hydrogen and iron(II) and (III) hydroxides, that will detach through dehydration into iron oxide and iron oxide(II). If your car is not new, it is extremely important to notice early signs of rust in the form of lumps, bumps, and scratches to the paint on the exterior of the automobile. Over time, these imperfections will turn into bubbles that can remove your paint.

Sometimes, automobile owners attempt to prevent rust by using a ‘car cover,’ but traditional car covers only do just that: 'cover' your car, leaving it exposed to the electrochemical reactions that actually cause rust and corrosion.

With Zerust Rust Prevention Technology, rust prevention for your automobile has never been easier. Preserve and protect your prized car with the ultimate solution: Zerust car covers.

Between car washes, keep your car covered and engine protected with a Zerust Deluxe Car Cover. This will not only preserve all the hard work you’ve put into your car and keep it protected from dirt, grime, moisture and anything else that happens to land on your car. All Zerust® Car Covers are woven with corrosion inhibiting formula to provide a VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) protection on the surface of your automobile.
